TOUR ISLAMORADA THIS WEEKEND - IN ISLAMORADA OR FROM HOME!
Take an historic journey this weekend...whether in Islamorada or from the cool comfort of home. Download the Florida Stories app, FLstories.org and go to the Islamorada walking tour.
You'll hear about the beginning of the Overseas Highway and the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane that toppled Henry Flagler's Over-Sea Railroad through Walk Historic Islamorada. You'll hear about the surprising array of stories that have impacted local history.
The tour starts at the historic Green Turtle Inn when it was Rustic Inn and goes on to an additional nine stops revealing stories of early pioneers, the most powerful hurricane to ever strike North America and the hurricane or Red Cross Houses built for survivors, the memorial built to honor hundreds of victims, and one of the few bona fide pirate stories connected to the island chain. The tour ends at the Pioneer Cemetery located on the property of Cheeca Lodge, at one time the heart of this historic community.
Walk Historic Islamorada is made possible through a partnership with Florida Humanities Council and the Florida Stories app.
