Indian Key is a small island located three-quarters of a mile out in the Atlantic Ocean side of Overseas Highway, around mile marker 78 in Islamorada.
Critical to the history of the Upper Keys, Indian Key was its first settlement, became the county seat for Dade County, served various functions including a shipwrecker's lair, then fell into relative obscurity. Today it is a state park, a lush ghost town of stone ruins and wild vegetation, accessible only by canoe or kayak.
