COUSTEAU TO BREAK COUSTEAU UNDERWATER RECORD!




Tomorrow, July 1, 2014, FABIEN COUSTEAU, ocean researcher and filmmaker, will break his grandfather's, JACQUES COUSTEAU, record for living underwater. Fabien is leading a team of scientists, educators and filmmakers on the longest-ever stationary habitat beneath the sea.

The habitat, called AQUARIUS REEF BASE, lies 63 feet below the surface in the FLORIDA KEYS NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY off Key Largo.

The project, called Mission 31, aims to build awareness about the need to protect the ocean and honors a historic expedition 50 years ago by Cousteau's famous grandfather, explorer, Jacques Cousteau. Read the full story from NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC at:

HOLLYWOOD UNDER THE SEA IN THE FLORIDA KEYS


Actor ADRIAN GRENIER - think “The Devil Wears Prada” and HBO’s “Entourage” – joined oceanographer/filmmaker FABIEN COUSTEAU  under water today in the AQUARIUS REEF BASE on Conch Reef, 5 miles offshore of Key Largo in the Florida Keys. Cousteau, grandson of the legendary Jacques Cousteau, is halfway through his 31-day mission at the undersea lab with researchers/aquanauts from Florida International University and Northeastern University. FLORIDA KEYS ARTIST MILLARD WELLS


The KEYS HISTORY & DISCOVERY FOUNDATION presents THE ART OF MILLARD WELLS, June 19th thru August 10th at the KEYS HISTORY & DISCOVERY CENTER, located on the grounds of GUY HARVEY’S ISLANDER RESORT, mile marker 82, Oceanside in Islamorada.
MILLARD WELLS (1921-2012) was a member of the prestigious AMERICAN WATERCOLOR SOCIETY and, from his home and studio in the Upper FLORIDA KEYS, produced a lifetime of impressions of the spectacular surroundings – becoming one the most esteemed and prolific watercolor specialists in Florida.
Also on display will be LEGENDS OF THE LINE, a historical perspective of the development of SPORTFISHING in the Upper Keys including high-profile legends such as ZANE GREY and baseball icon TED WILLIAMS.

FLORIDA KEYS BOTANICAL STATE PARK




DAGNY JOHNSON KEY LARGO HAMMOCK BOTANICAL STATE PARK was established in 1982 and was named for a local environmental activist. The park includes @ 2,400 acres on the northern third of the island of Key Largo. It has been set aside to preserve its unique ecosystems as well as the adjacent John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge. It is perfect for hiking, biking and observing wildlife. The main entrance is located on Monroe County Road 905 @ one-half mile north of the intersection with US Highway 1 at mile marker 106.
